– Utilizing gestures and emotions observed in traditional Korean markets
– Investigating contemporary movements that may become future traditions

《Boisterous Bodies》 begins with the bustling gestures of a traditional Korean marketplace. Everyday actions—vendors rhythmically calling out “Come and buy!”, a candy seller performing with playful flair, or rice-cake makers pounding dough in time with the beat—are reimagined through the dancers’ movements and transformed into new rhythms and energies on stage. The work weaves the market’s vitality and chaos into a collective rhythm, immersing the audience as if they were standing in the very heart of the marketplace. In doing so, it explores how the gestures of today may become the traditions of tomorrow, offering a fresh vision of contemporary Korean dance.

Choreographer Eun-Jeong Shin translates the gestures of everyday Korean life into a contemporary stage language. From the marketplace calls of street vendors, to the ritualistic scrubbing in public bathhouses, to ceremonial acts within wedding traditions—her work expands these familiar scenes, rich with social and emotional resonance, into the vocabulary of dance. At the heart of her inquiry lies the question: “Can the gestures of today become the traditions of tomorrow?”

Rooted in Korean dance yet moving beyond mere reenactment, Shin reimagines these embodied practices through a contemporary sensibility, offering audiences not only a reconfiguration of tradition but also a shared, corporeal experience of community.
